Batman’s Most Controversial Movie Moment Has Its Own Toy
The end of the conflict between Batman and Superman so easily ended up being mocked, including a controversial scene in “Deadpool 2” at the moment’s expense. In the film, Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) tries to explain why he’s late to Vanessa (Morena Baccarin), joking, “I was fighting a caped badass, but then we discovered his mom is named Martha too.” The line is a direct shot at the mega intense moment from “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” and a rare joke from a Marvel movie (albeit, under the 20th Century Fox umbrella) at its biggest competitor in DC Entertainment.
However, before “Deadpool 2” got in on the “Martha” jokes, the comic book version of the titular hero quipped about it first.
In 2017’s “Deadpool vs. The Punisher” (by Fred Van Lente, Pere Perez, Ruth Redmond, and VC’s Joe Sabino), a bloody fight between the antihero ends with Deadpool joking about his mom’s name being Martha, with the Merc with a Mouth later saying, “people whose mothers have the same name shouldn’t fight. We shouldn’t try to kill each other,” while suggesting he has a common bond with Frank Castle. Upon finding out Castle’s mom is named Louise, he hilariously calls off the momentary truce. So, whether it’s other universes like Marvel taking shots at the scene, or with the new Hot Toy commemorating it, the “Martha” line continues to live on years after “Batman v Superman” was released.
