David Ayer Promises His Suicide Squad Cut Will ‘Change History’
For fans who are unaware of the history behind “Suicide Squad,” the movie originally was more or less under David Ayer’s control until a viral trailer cut to Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” dropped. From here, Warner Bros., fearing that Ayer’s film wouldn’t deliver on the hype, submitted his movie to be recut by the ad agency behind the trailer.
This, naturally, led to an uneven film that was far too focused on musical cues from popular songs and maintaining its wacky atmosphere to deliver much at all on the “Suicide Squad” director’s vision. Still, far from holding a grudge after all these years, Ayer is calling for peace between fans of the original movies and the upcoming DCU.
“I absolutely can’t wait to see Gunn’s Superman,” Ayer said of James Gunn on X. “I have to say this. Gunn is the bravest man in Hollywood these days. He’s taking charge of the hardest ship to Captain in this industry. We make movies. We are entertainers … Not elected officials leading a nation. Everyone, please chill.”
Hopefully, fans who are still miffed that the Snyderverse is no longer moving forward can eventually let the issue lie, as it looks like the nails are well and truly in its coffin, regardless of what you think of it. As for Ayer’s potential “Suicide Squad” recut, DC aficionados will have to decide for themselves if it meets the director’s lofty praise.
